Yegua Update

February 2026

Superintendent Welcome Message

Eric Holton

SISD Superintendent

Hey Yeguas!

Even though the calendar may still say February, spring has definitely sprung! With warmer temperatures already upon us, our campuses are buzzing with energy as we charge full steam ahead into a busy and exciting season of learning, activities, and growth.

February also marked an important milestone for Somerville ISD as work officially began on our May 2025 Bond projects. Asbestos abatement crews have started the first phase of the process, signaling real progress toward the improvements our community supported. It’s always exciting to see plans begin to take shape, and we look forward to sharing updates along the way.

There is so much to celebrate this time of year, and we are grateful for the continued support of our Yegua community as we move forward together.

Somerville Education Foundation

Thank you to all those who supported
SEF's 2nd Annual Winter Gala!

Play

Our community came together for a great night of food, fun, and supporting our students and staff through the Somerville ISD Education Foundation.

This year's fundraising event raised almost $50,000 dollars! We owe a huge thank you to all of our SEF Board Members, who selflessly work to provide opportunities for our community!

Since its formation in 2022, SEF has raised more than $130,000 to benefit our students and teachers.

Black History Month

Play

Somerville ISD was honored to celebrate Black History Month this February. The theme of our school's Black History Month program was:

"Honoring the past. Inspiring the future."

Throughout the ceremony, we spotlighted many historical trailblazers in the African American community and shared lessons that continue to inspire us all.

Some of our younger Yeguas participated in a live "wax museum", dressing up as some of our country's most iconic African American figures. They did a great job!

Yegua Extracurriculars

Yegua Athletics

Somerville ISD's spring sports are in full swing. Baseball, softball, tennis, powerlifting, and track & field have begun competition. We're excited to see them each have continued success!

Please view our Yegua Athletic Board Report for more information on each of our programs.

Christopher Deere (FB) signs to play at McMurry

Senior Christopher Deere signed to continue his football career at the next level. Deere will attend McMurry University in Abilene next season.

McMurry competes in the NCAA's Division III and has won two consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) titles.

Go War Hawks and go Yeguas!!

T&F: Vela breaks school record in high jump

Our reigning UIL state champion, Jeremy Vela, shattered his previous personal best (6'8") with a new school record high jump - 6 feet, 10 inches!

Our girls continued that hot streak this past weekend, going 4-0 at the Schulenburg Tournament! A special congratulations to junior Emma Williams, who recorded her 250th career strikeout, and freshman Abigail Richardson, who hit her first career home run!

On February 2nd, the UIL released its new districts for the upcoming 2026-27 and 2027-28 academic years.

Take a look at some of the Yeguas' upcoming district opponents for football, basketball, and volleyball!

The following students performed in a clarinet quartet called 'American Sketch' by John McCay:

Faith Fernandez, JaeLee Landolt, Rhyan Ricci, and Jade Saxon

The following students performed in a brass sextet called 'Bartok For Brass" by Bela Bartok / Siekmann:

Kyle Brooks (Bb Trumpet), Ryann Dekneef (French Horn), Galeya Cisneros (Trombone), Mason Novosad (Bb Trumpet), Ethan Ramirez (Euphonium), Olivia Vega (Tuba)

All of these fine musicians have earned the right to advance to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest in May.

Congratulations again!

2025 Bond Updates

Well, Phase I of our 2025 Bond is officially underway! On February 17, 2026, we held a pre-bid informational meeting with over 40 different contractors to provide them with an overview of the work and timelines included in the Phase I scope of work. Bids for Phase I projects are due in early March, and in late March, the Somerville ISD Board of Trustees will consider approving various bids and contractors for this work. In mid-February, design plans for Phase II of our projects began, including the Ag Barn, Baseball and Softball Complex, and renovations to Yegua Stadium!

This past week, asbestos abatement crews began work on the old Somerville Junior High Campus and will soon move into other areas where asbestos abatement will also be occurring. As we move into March, demolition of several structures throughout the district will also begin. For now, there should not be any major disruptions to traffic patterns for our students, staff, and community members. Springtime is sure to bring some big changes to our school district! If you have any questions about our 2025 Bond projects, please feel free to reach out to Eric Holton, Superintendent, Somerville ISD, at 979-596-2153 to set up a meeting or to discuss over the phone.
